„Highlights from 125 years of motorsports“23.01.2019
The Mercedes-Benz Museum will be well-represented in the Mercedes-Benz Hall (Paul Horn Hall, Hall 10) at RETRO CLASSICS® STUTTGART: in addition to sales vehicles from the company's own provider All Time Stars, historically important pieces from the extensive collection will be displayed on a large area covering 500 square metres. "Highlights commemorating the 125th anniversary of motorsports," promises Ralph Wagenknecht from Mercedes-Benz Classic. "These exhibits will showcase the unique motorsports history of the Mercedes-Banz marque."
This history began in summer 1894 with the trip from Paris to Rouen, the first ever car race. The prize of 5,000 gold francs was won back then by vehicles from Peugeot and Panhard & Levassor, which triumphed over the now seemingly absurd competitors comprising steam-driven vehicles, hydraulic vehicles and compressed-air vehicles. Under the bonnet: a two-cylinder V-type engine each designed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. This advanced engine will be exhibited at RETRO CLASSICS® 2019.
Visitors to the event will also be able to admire a Benz 200 PS. The legendary "Blitzen-Benz“ has the largest-displacement engine ever used in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Driven by 200 horsepower, the 21-5-litre racing car exceeded the "magic" speed limit of 200 kilometres per hour for the first time in 1909 – and was therefore the fastest land vehicle at that time, twice as fast as an aeroplane. In 1910 a model attained a speed of 211 kilometres per hour at Daytona Beach. A new world record which the "Blitzen-Benz" itself exceeded just a short time later: it was driven by the American Bob Burman, the world's fastest man in 1911 with a speed of 228 kilometres per hour.
Subsequently, Mercedes-Benz was literally unbeatable in motor racing. Younger racing generations will also be represented at RETRO CLASSICS® in the form of a Formula 1 W 196 R racing car (1955) and a GT CLK-LM racing sports car (1998).
